Scottish brewer Innis & Gunn has released a one-off playful new lager that aims to poke fun at British drinkers’ penchant for ‘continental’ beers.
The limited-edition brew, cheekily named Iññez & Gunn, has made its debut exclusively at the company’s taprooms in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Innis & Gunn’s flagship lager recently clinched gold at the World Beer Awards.
The launch of the lager was celebrated with a vibrant Spanish-themed event on Edinburgh’s Princes Street. Crowds gathered to witness a midday fiesta, complete with a flamenco show by TuFlamenco and the distribution of 500 bottles of the new ‘cerveza’.

The inspiration behind this tongue-in-cheek release stems from a recent survey commissioned by Innis & Gunn. The study revealed that 38% of Brits believe Spain produces the best beer and are willing to pay more for continental lagers.
However, only 8% are aware that Madrí Excepcional, marketed as ‘Madrid’s Modern Lager’, is actually brewed in Yorkshire. The study also revealed that 90% of Brits have been misled by beer branding.
Innis & Gunn founder and master brewer Dougal Sharp, said, “We’ve been inspired by our dear friends at Madri. We saw how easy it was to convince British drinkers that a beer with a Spanish-sounding name and a fancy label is from somewhere exotic. So, we thought, why not get in on the action?”
